The CFR Source 
We purchase the official electronic Code of Federal Regulations from the U.S. Government Printing Office. Using our carefully developed computer technology, we convert this official electronic version to a form suitable for today's PC using Microsoft Windows. The result is a highly accurate electronic CFR. 

The Windows Interface 
We designed a special Windows interface for the Code of Federal Regulations. We took some of the toughest problems faced by the CFR user and developed CodeLink, our superior electronic CFR technology. 

CFR Outline 
Our Codelink based outline view is an excellent tool for exploring and topic searching. The CFR is a highly structured document. CodeLink technology harnesses that structure to give you capabilities far superior to the printed text. Expand or contract the outline to any level by clicking on the graphical outline controls. When you see a topic of interest, double click on that line for a CodeLink launched text display! 

CFR Text Display 
The main workhorse of Gavindex^TM CFR is the formatted, true-text display of the official CFR, including over 200 special CFR characters. 

Keeping your Place 
(and your cool) 
It is easy to get lost in the regulatory text. Gavindex^TM CFR features two CodeLink tools, the Locator Bar and the Heading Bar, to help you keep your bearings in the regulatory jungle. The Locator Bar is a dynamic display of the official CFR reference for the current cursor location. The Heading Bar displays the chapter, subchapter, part, subpart, or section heading - instantly updated as you browse the text. Or, to get a complete picture, just hit a hot key or menu to display all heading information at once. Try that with the printed CFR! 

Finding Regulations 
Is there a regulation that applies to your business operation? If so, where is it, what is the impact, and what risks do you face? Gavindex^TM CFR provides three ways to search CFR text, including tables and appendices. For each type of search you can select a single volume, multiple volumes, or even multiple titles to search. The three searches are Search, Expert Search, and Pattern Search. Search and Expert Search use an index of each volume created at Gavin Research to enable fast searches of CFR text. 

Logical Word Searching 
Have you heard of logical (or boolean) searching? It's a powerful technique intended to help find text related to phrases, concepts, or impressions. Search and Expert Search are the Gavindex^TM CFR logical search tools. Search features an easy to use dialog box interface that does the difficult work for you. You can look up a word instantly in the volume word list to see how many times it occurs, before you start a search. Search for up to three words or word groups with automatic insertion of logical operators. Use Expert Search to construct more complicated logical search expressions. 

Pattern Search 
To search for characters and strings not contained in the index, such as complex chemical names, Pattern Search is the right tool. 

Search Results 
Search results are displayed in a versatile split pane window listing the hits by reference and displaying the text surrounding each hit. This allows rapid evaluation of search results. When you find a hit of interest, double click to launch a text display with hits highlighted in red. To print the search results, just click the print button for a preformated printout. 

Exploration and Interpretation 
Once you have found the regulations of interest, exploration, interpretation, and application to your business is the next challenge. Traditionally, this was largely left to regulatory experts or consultants. Now, Gavindex^TM CFR makes exploring the regulations so much easier, you can do it too. View Control-Set the window size to suit you, then tile, cascade, overlap. Font Control-Set the font style and size to match your reading style. Go To Tools-Zip directly to a CFR reference, go to the beginning or to end of a volume, go to the Finding Aids. Windows Text Control-Use the mouse operated scroll bar, or the familiar keyboard commands to navigate the text. 

CFR Cross References 
One of the most vexing characteristics of the CFR is the extensive use of cross references. A cross reference is a CFR reference which some way pertains to the regulation at hand. Let's explore what Gavindex^TM CFR CodeLink can do to help. 

Cross Reference Hypertext 
Gavindex^TM CFR features CodeLink Cross Reference Hypertext. When you come to a cross reference in the regulations, simply double-click on the cross reference. The CodeLink engine will automatically extract the reference from the text, determine the length of the cross reference and launch a new window displaying only the cross referenced text. You can quickly select the cross reference for copying or printing. This exclusive feature is reason enough to own Gavindex^TM CFR! 

CFR Tables 
Tables in the CFR represent a special challenge. Our technology allows you to view, search, print and copy tables, almost identical in format to the original printed tables, even tables over 100 pages long! 

CFR Illustrations 
Some titles of the CFR include drawings, illustrations, complex formulas. These are not included in the electronic CFR published by the GPO, thus they are not included in Release 1.0 of Gavindex^TM CFR. 

Printing Features  
We designed Gavindex^TM CFR to give you rapid, flexible, trouble-free printing. Preset formats give you a choice of 1, 2, or 3 column text, complete with headers and footers to identify what you are printing. Use our spin boxes to select the text print range or even print an entire volume! Quick print the search results with your choice of three formats. This is a great way to generate a fast regulatory report for those last minute meetings. Also, quick print the outline view of any CFR volume on your system 

Bookmarks 
The CodeLink bookmark feature is a flexible tool which allows you to mark your place, save it easily to a bookmark file, and quickly return to that bookmarked location. Gavindex^TM CFR will automatically name the bookmark, or you can name it to suit your needs. You may save, move and archive as many bookmark files as you wish. 

Copy to your Word Processor 
Use the Windows clipboard to copy CFR text to your word processor for reports, procedures, government submissions, or training materials. 

Your Personal Tool 
Gavindex^TM CFR is designed to be your personal CFR. Order just the CFR volumes you need. You can order more volumes at any time. Install it on your PC or your laptop. You don't have to be a computer expert, either. All you need is a starting knowledge of Windows. Available on disk or CD-ROM bundles.
